Your Toddler’s Development – 1 to 3 years

Close-up of a toddler wearing a striped T-shirt and denim shorts, standing against a plain light background, with a neutral facial expression.

Over the next 2 years your little one will experience a huge growth in their vocabulary, from a few single words at 12 months to many hundreds of words, and some short phrases, by 2 years.

By the time they are 3 they will be using full sentences and will be able to make themselves understood even to unfamiliar people. This is a magical time when you will start to have conversations with your child and better understand the independent little person they are.

As before, your child can understand much more than they can tell you, so continue talking about the exciting world that is all around them.
